Boat work done so far
As I promised, let’s review the progress I’ve made so far with my sailboat renovation. If you missed it, you can read about the boat in the previous post.
Here’s the list of completed activities:
- A new electrical system, including a new distribution box, solar panels, a car radio to listen to the music, installation of an echo sounder and an autopilot.
- A new ceiling and a new floor. There was no ceiling at all before, and the original floor was very makeshift.
- New windows and their frames which I 3D-printed, because the price for new windows with aluminium frames was the same as the price of the boat.
- A new tiller. Actually, since I used the wrong type of plywood for the first one, I decided to make another — so now it is almost ready, and there are two new tillers).
- New companionway washboard.
- Fully new interior on the port side of the cabin and new shelf on the starboard side.
- A new mainsail cover.
- New cushions in the main cabin.
- A magnetic compass installed (there were no navigational tools at all before).
There are some other jobs that haven’t been completed yet, like the fresh water system, cabin insulation and covering the interior with vinyl, so I’ll leave those aside for now. I also plan to replace some things I’ve already done, like the washboard (I used plywood that was too thin), but that’s a low priority task.
I’ll probably share more details about some of these later, but at the moment I’m going full ahead with what’s probably the hardest task — painting the boat — and I need to finish it, along with other things, before the sailing club launches the boats in less than two weeks. So, I’ll come back to this topic later.
